Today's journey along the trail brings us to a new state, Connecticut, and with it, a much-needed opportunity to slow down and reflect. After two consecutive days of intense hiking, covering over 25 miles each, a leisurely morning felt like a luxury.
The transition from New York to Connecticut was marked by an easy first mile, followed by a gradual climb. Crossing the state border, I felt a sense of accomplishment, having now entered my tenth state on this incredible journey.
My new hiking shoes, though comfortable, are still in the break-in phase, reminding me that even the most well-equipped adventurer needs time to adjust. This realization led to a more relaxed pace, which, combined with a less ambitious mileage goal for the day, allowed for a different kind of appreciation of the trail.
About four miles into the hike, I joined Shooter by the river, soaking our feet in the cold water. It was a welcome break, and the trail along the river offered a peaceful mile of hiking. A short detour to a covered bridge added a touch of history to our journey, a reminder of the diverse experiences the trail can offer.
As we continued, a steep climb challenged us, and I found myself losing my balance, a momentary stumble that brought a smile to my face. The view from the top, however, was a reward in itself, offering a glimpse of the surrounding countryside. The next few miles were a pleasant mix of flat terrain and gentle undulations.
The final stretch into Kent was marked by two steep climbs, each followed by a descent. Even a snake sighting added to the excitement! Arriving in Kent, we refreshed with cold drinks and then headed to an outfitter, arriving just as they were closing. It was a minor inconvenience, but one that didn't dampen our spirits.
Our next stop, Cozzy's on Main, was a welcome treat. We enjoyed a delicious 14-inch pizza and some garlic knots, a well-deserved feast after a day of hiking. The evening hike along the Housatonic River was a perfect end to the day, with the river providing a beautiful backdrop.
In my opinion, today's hike was a reminder that the trail offers more than just physical challenges. It's a journey of self-discovery, where each day brings new experiences, from the comfort of a well-deserved break to the thrill of a snake sighting. It's these moments that make the trail a truly unique adventure.
As we settle into our shelter for the night, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore these beautiful states and the memories we're creating along the way.
